The overall objective is to provide the Youth Participants
with a Global Perspective on issues of Homelessness
/ Poverty and to investigate Medical and Emotional
Preventative work in one of the most delicate
ecological areas of the world. This is in accord
with the
Scottish Executives aims in its desire that education
should provide a Global perspective ( see bibliography)
This objective will be achieved by a research
programme with three aims.
AIM 1 :
To visit the work of Union Biblica Peru, who work
amongst Street Children in Peru
We shall investigate how Urban and Rural poverty
is being tackled by local people through micro
development industries with Street Children in
the Centres run by Union Biblica.
We shall visit the Street Kids centres in Kawai
( 90 km south of Lima) Centro Girasoles ( the Street
Boy Centre in Lima, and the Street Work amongst Children
and young people in Iquitos Amazonia
Individual projects we shall see at first hand will
include,
LIMA : The New Bakery , (opened late 2004 funded
by donations from Scotland)
Casa Girasoles , learning how street boys are cared for and given dignity and
respect
We shall participate in a drama which tells the story of the Street Boy written
and
performed by them themselves .
Visit to Shanti Town to learn form those who live
there what drew them to the city of
Lima
IQUITOS: The Water Rebottling Plant , a micro development
site which provides work
employment and cheap fresh pure water for the city.
Casa de Los Tigres: Street Boys grow up. We shall
see how Union Biblica
addresses the long term issue of homelessness amongst young men by providing
a
home and educational / work opportunities.
Puerto Belen. 80.000 people living on the banks
of the Amazon River in Iquitos in
squalor and poverty. We shall visit the newly opened medical facility funded
by
Loyds TSB and the Vine Trust Bo’ness in 2005.
Puerto Alegria A visit overnight to the orphanage on the Itaya River 45 minutes
by speedboat from Iquitos, where the most damaged young children live.
AIM 2
To Visit the Medical ship Amazon Hope on the
Amazon River in Upper Peru,
We shall see how primary medical and dental care
is being offered free to indigenous tribes on the
Amazon ( this is provided by Union Biblical Del Peru
with the full cooperation of the Regional Government
of Loreto, in Amazonia and the National Government
in Lima, where the Presidents wife is currently an
Advisor to the project) The last estimate was some
7,000 people had received such help since 2002. Plans
for a project for up to 100,000 people is in hand.
We hope to travel on the Amazon Hope on its way
to take medical care to the Ocaina Indians ( or other
tribes dependent on the time of year)
See www.amazonferry.com for
more up to date information of all aspects of this
project.
AIM 3
To gain perspectives on the issues of balancing
Tourism and Ecology in Cusco Maccu Piccu/ Sacred
Valley
A further Aim is to consider the issues of ecological
balance which we will have seen in Amazonia and
as contrasting it with issues facing the Cusco/
Maccu Piccu Sacred Valley.
As well as the spectacle of visiting this World Heritage
Site we shall be seeking to provide a perspective
on sustainable and ecological tourism
